Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw

Picture
The Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw project is based on the Cycling Without Age scheme that originated in Copenhagen and is now popular in many towns and cities all over the world. In the UK, a scheme in Falkirk proved so successful that it is being rolled out across Scotland.

We started rides in June 2018, thanks to grants from Bury St Edmunds Town Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council to get up and running. We currently have over 30 volunteers and we offer free rides around the town to people experiencing limited mobility/and or social isolation. The idea is to give people an opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and interaction with others - the rider, and passersby. Running costs (insurance, maintenance, administration etc) are covered by sponsorship and in-kind donations.

The guiding principles of the Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw project, adapted from Cycling Without Age are:

Generosity: BSE Rickshaw is based on generosity and kindness. It starts with the obvious generous act of taking one or two elderly or less-abled people out on a bike ride. It’s a simple act that everyone can do.

Slowness: Slowness allows you to sense the environment, be present in the moment and it allows people you meet along the way to be curious and gain knowledge about BSE Rickshaw because you make time to stop and talk.

Storytelling: We listen to stories, we tell stories on the bike and we also document the stories when we share them via word of mouth or on social media.

Relationships: BSE Rickshaw is about creating a multitude of new relationships: between generations, among the elderly, between pilots and passengers, able bodied and disabled, care organsiation employees and family members. Relationships build trust, happiness and quality of life.
